 MUMBAI CASE

Mumbai: The state ATS has captured two men, including a Mankhurd scrap seller, for unlawfully having and attempting to sell 7.1kg radioactive uranium worth around Rs 21.3 crore. It is utilized in malignant growth treatment and in aviation, an authority said.

The case started in mid-February when the ATS got a hint that a Thane occupant, Jigar Jayesh Pandya (27), was attempting to sell bits of a uranium substance. The ATS sent a spurious client who got some for over Rs 1 lakh and afterward sent it to Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Trombay for examination.

In the mean time, Pandya was confined and addressed. He said he got it from Abu Tahir Choudhary (31), who the ATS captured from the piece market and seized from him 7.1kg uranium. "Choudhary said he needed to sell it for Rs 5 crore," said an ATS official.

On Wednesday, the BARC report affirmed it was uranium. "The report expressed that the substance is characteristic uranium, profoundly radioactive and perilous to human existence," said an ATS official. Agents are attempting to discover where it was acquired from.

Following the report, Arjun Panda, local chief, Atomic Minerals Directorate of Exploration and Research at Nagpur, held up a FIR and the couple was captured. They were reserved under areas of the Atomic Energy Act, 1962. A NIA court later remanded them in police care till May 12.
